CAT (Common Admission Test)

Description

CAT (Common Admission Test) is a national-level management entrance exam conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) on a rotational basis. It is a computer-based test conducted annually for admission to various management programs, including MBA, PGDM, and other postgraduate courses in management at various IIMs and other top B-schools across India. The CAT exam consists of three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. The exam duration is 180 minutes, and candidates have to answer 100 multiple-choice questions. The CAT score is used by various B-schools in India for their admission process, along with their own selection criteria. The CAT exam is highly competitive, and lakhs of students appear for it every year.

  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible to appear for the CAT exam, a candidate must have a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 50% marks (45% for SC/ST/PWD categories) from a recognized university or institute. Final year students are also eligible to apply.
  • Application Process: The CAT exam notification is generally released in August, and the application process starts soon after. Candidates have to fill the application form online, pay the application fee, and upload their photograph, signature, and other required documents. The application fee for the CAT exam is around Rs. 2000 for general and NC-OBC category candidates, and Rs. 1000 for SC/ST/PWD candidates.
  • Exam Pattern: The CAT exam consists of three sections, as mentioned earlier. The total number of questions and duration of each section may vary every year. The exam is conducted in a computer-based format, and candidates have to answer the questions on the computer screen.
  • Exam Syllabus: The CAT exam syllabus includes topics from various subjects, such as Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension. Candidates are advised to refer to the official CAT exam website for the detailed syllabus.
  • Admit Card: Candidates who successfully register for the CAT exam can download their admit card from the official website. The admit card contains important details such as the candidate's name, roll number, exam center, and timings.
  • Result and Counseling: The CAT exam results are generally declared in January or February. Based on the CAT score and other selection criteria of the respective B-schools, candidates are shortlisted for further rounds of selection, such as Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). The final admission offer is made based on the candidate's performance in these rounds.
